A learnership is a work-based program that is managed by Sector Education and Training Authorities (SETAs) allowing learners to gain skills in an NQF registered qualification such as Manufacturing level 3, project management Level 4, that will equip them to work and gain experience to that will give them an advantage when they are seeking employment. BConsult has full accreditation for these qualifications and more.
The government recognised the need for skilled workers and began providing the youth of South Africa with opportunities to acquire technical skills through a registered NQF qualification. The aim of the learnership programme is to address the high unemployment rate, insufficient access to educational skills training, and the shortage of skilled learners in South Africa.
This NQF-aligned learnership programme is crucial in bridging the gap in the growing shortage of skills, the scarcity of learners trained in a registered NQF qualification and the high unemployment rate. Candidates enrolled in a learnership have employment opportunities even at the end of the work-based programme, as well as an NQF registered qualification, while getting on-the-job experience.
Are you a South African resident or citizen either employed or unemployed? Aged between 16 and 35 years old with a high school leaving certificate or tertiary certificate? Then you are eligible for a learnership programme. While some skills development training centres differ in their requirements, high school and higher-level education are requisite for some skills training centres.
The minimum entry requirements vary for each skills development training centre, however, depending on the programme, most learnership programmes require a person to be a South African Citizen, some learnerships do not have minimum requirements but some require you to be in possession of Grade 10 – 12 school leaving report at least, and must be ages between 16 – 35.
A transport allowance, commonly known as a stipend is paid to candidates during the duration of the learnership programme. This stipend is usually paid every month and assists candidates travel between their home and the host organisation. This stipend is paid on a monthly basis, provided that the candidate remains enrolled in the programme and attends classes and work-based training. How long does it take to complete a learnership?
During the learnership, you will be required to fulfill various assignments, including written tests, projects, practical tasks, and demonstrations. Assessment will occur both in the classroom and in the workplace to evaluate your progress and performance.
After the end of the learnership term, learners will receive a certificate after completion of their course, provided that their assignments, tasks, practical tests, and projects are submitted on time. The certificate of completion will certify the acquired skills in the specified area. The certificate can then be used to apply for employment.
The learnership agreement is a legal and binding agreement signed by the employee, employer, and the provider offering the theoretical training component of the learnership. The agreement outlines the terms and conditions of the training, such as the start and end dates. At the time of signing the learnership agreement, the employee will be required to provide their certified copy identity document and National Senior Certificate.
Like any legal contracts learnership agreements may be terminated. A learnership contract is automatically terminated when the learner has successfully completed a learnership. The violation of the policies and the terms and conditions in a learnership agreement by the learner calls for the termination of the contract. A learner can also terminate a learnership contract. However, there are procedures to follow when resigning from a learnership contract.
Learnerships are funded by the relevant Sector Education and Training Authorities (SETA) when discretionary grants are available. Some companies also pay for a learnership for the benefit of the SARS tax incentives.
Candidates enrolling for a learnership don’t have to pay for anything. All that is required of them is to attend classes, complete all assessments and do work-based learning. The government and sponsor companies cover all costs related to the learnership.
There is no guarantee that a learner will have a job at the end of the learnership, however, with a qualification and work experience, a candidate stands at a better position than before to be employed after the end of the learnership. At BConsult a good percentage of learners who perform well during the learnership period are absorbed by host companies to work for them full-time after the learnership contract has expired
There has been a growing concerns learners enrolling for two learnerships at once and face problems at a later stage. A learner CANNOT enrol for two or more learnerships at the same time. This may also be considered to be a fraudulent activity.
